It was not a easy start fifteen years ago when Tim Westergren began the company Pandora, originally called Savage Best Technologies. He recalls the first years of its life dedicated to trying to stay afloat. By 2001, a year after the launch of Pandora, the company had 50 employees and no money to speak of. In a interview with Tim Westergren New York Times discovers that for the first couple of years Pandoras employees went without pay most of the time, he was constantly begging people to stay unpaid for another two weeks. It took many pitches and various investors for Pandora to be okay. In the next couple of years I order to survive Pandora had to make crucial choices to survive. They pitched for a 9 million dollar investment, changed the name to what it is known today and replaced himself with Joe Kennedy as executive chief of Pandora. They were finally making moves and in 2005, Pandora sold its first advertisement. Things were looking up. But, in the year 2007, they received news that threatened to ruin it all. The Music Board raised the fee that Radio Stations had to pay record labels for every song. They contemplated "pulling the plug" on Pandora all together. But, with a little negotiating they were able to lower the rate. It was not until 2009 almost nine years after the first launch of Pandora, two years after it almost collapse, that the sweat and tears of the employees began to be worth it. In the year 2009 Pandora reported their first profitable quarter and a annual even use of 50 million. Tim Westergren describes this as a, "out of body experience." In the year 2010 digital analyst Ralph Schackart predicted the animal revenue to reach a hight of 100 million. But, this profit was only from advertisers, investors. They could only imagine what would happen when people actually started to visit Pandora religiously. But, when Pandora launched the first Pandora app, 34,000 people a day streamed signed up. It was a revolution for Pandora. It was only the beginning.
As of now Pandora is still evolving to become something much bigger. They want to one day have Pandora in every house on every appliance. Like said above this is only the beginning, they have not even began with what they can and will do. Wait for what's to come, because it will be amazing.
Seeing as Pandora is still new, the people who began Pandora are still running it. And, here they are...
Although Pandora is a free based radio earns money by offering a chance to buy a plan which includes getting rid of the twenty second advertisements that play between songs, and dismisses the bans on skipping only a certain amount of songs. It is a chance to listen to which ever song you like no matter how many you skip and allow you to listen to them without the hassle of advertisements. It is a good investment for most.
Currently Pandora is being traded on the stock market NYSE, under the symbol P:
the current amount per stock is $16.81. If you look to right you can see Pandoras price history for the past five years.
Pandora created a session they call "whiteboard sessions" which debuts upcoming artist. They come to the many Pandora buildings and in front of the famous whiteboard they play a song for the Pandora employees. Not only do they get noticed, and advertised, but the employees get a show. Also, on the whiteboard Pandora designers draw what best represents the artist and the song they are playing. It is a joy for all.
